Guest Authorship Program
The IFEMED Journal Club is responsible for publishing the IFEMED Journal, an annual periodical that explores issues of relevance to health professionals in developing countries. Since its inception in 1975, the Journal Club has been charged with the responsibility of producing high-quality, cutting-edge research journals, a responsibility it has upheld with distinction across five decades of student scholarship.
We are now in our 30th Volume, a landmark edition that coincides with the Golden Jubilee of the IFEMED Journal Club. The Journal ranks in the top 2% of all publications on Academia and is known for its exceptional standards, being well respected within and far beyond Obafemi Awolowo University. This volume, therefore, carries a significance that extends beyond the academic, representing both a milestone in the history of student-led publishing in Nigeria and a celebration of the intellectual legacy the Club has built since 1975.
The Editorial Board recognises that research writing is a critical component of advancement in the health sciences, and that many members of the Obafemi Awolowo University Medical Students’ Association (IFUMSA) who are not members of the Journal Club equally seek to be part of this advancement. It is on this note that the Editorial Board officially launched the Guest Authorship Program in the 2021/22 Journal Year, to involve Clinical Students directly in the research writing and publication process. The programme is open for application again this journal year, and we are pleased to invite applications from interested participants.
Accepted applicants will be paired with a senior member of the Journal Club, and an Editorial Consultant will be assigned to the pair, with whom they will work closely to produce a high-impact review article for publication in this year’s journal. The journal is themed “Artificial Intelligence and Robotics in Clinical Practice” and will cover topics spanning the application of artificial intelligence and robotics across clinical specialties including Surgery, Internal Medicine, Radiology, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Psychiatry, Emergency Medicine, Public Health, Medical Education, and related fields. This is a historic edition and an exceptional opportunity to contribute to it.
Application is open exclusively to Clinical II and Clinical III students of the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, Obafemi Awolowo University. Interested applicants are encouraged to review the application requirements carefully before proceeding, and all other enquiries should be directed to the Editor-in-Chief via ifemedjc@gmail.com.
Eligible applicants are to indicate their interest in writing, in a letter addressed to the Editor-in-Chief. The letter must be co-signed by two members of the Journal Club in the applicant’s class, who can vouch for their commitment to the research writing process. A Statement of Purpose must also be submitted alongside the application letter, allowing the Editorial Board to reach an objective and fair conclusion regarding each applicant’s suitability as a guest author in the Journal.
All application materials are to be submitted via ifemedjc@gmail.com on or before 30th May, 2026. Research writing is a time-intensive process requiring significant commitment, and applicants are advised to consider this carefully before applying. Applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis.
