APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
All applicants must submit TWO items:
1. COMPULSORY ESSAY
Title: “IFEMED Journal Club at 50: Strengthening a Legacy of Excellence for the Next Generation.”
Word Limit: Maximum 1,500 words
Format: Analytical and Reflective.
Your essay should demonstrate:

- 1. A clear understanding of IFEMED’s mission, work, and historical significance

- 2. Strengths and gaps you observe in its operations, visibility, or impact

- 3. Evidence-informed ideas for improving relevance, readership, and academic influence

- 4. How you hope to contribute personally to the Journal Club

- 5. Originality, structured argumentation, and feasibility of recommendations
This essay will be used to assess clarity of thought, writing skill, creativity, and commitment to scholarly development.
2. OPTIONAL TASK (Choose ONE)
Word Limit: Maximum 2,000 words (except PowerPoint option)
A. Narrative Review
Topic: Urbanization and the Changing Epidemiology of Disease in West Africa
Your review should synthesise recent literature, highlight major trends, and identify future directions.
B. Scientific Commentary / Policy Insight
Topic: Strengthening Nigeria’s Primary Healthcare System: Lessons from Successful PHC Models in LMICs
Your commentary should offer analytical insight and actionable, evidence-based recommendations.
C. Journal Club Critique (PowerPoint Slides)
Article: Burnout among public health workers in Canada: a cross-sectional study

Slide Outline (Max 12 slides):
This includes Background, Objectives, Methods, Results, Strengths, Limitations, Clinical/Policy Implications & Conclusion.
(Title and references excluded from 12-slide count.)
Slides should be concise, clear, and visually organized.
D. Letter to the Editor (750–1,000 words)
Respond to any IFEMED Journal article. Letters must demonstrate critical thinking, academic courtesy, and constructive engagement with the publication. Exceptional letters may be considered for publication.

Essays: Microsoft Document only
Critique: PowerPoint (.ppt/.pptx only)
- Font: Times New Roman or Calibri, 12 pt
- Spacing: 1.5
- Referencing: Vancouver style (mandatory for all tasks)
- Plagiarism Limit: 30% maximum
- No AI-generated or AI-assisted writing. Use of AI writing tools will result in automatic disqualification.
- File name/Subject Line: Full Name – Class – Task
